The battle for dashboard dominance is heating up as Apple prepares to roll out video streaming support for CarPlay, potentially beating Android Auto to the punch in bringing in-car entertainment to the next level.
According to Apple's latest developer update for the CarPlay mirroring system, app developers will soon be able to enable "AirPlay video in the car" by making the necessary adjustments to their applications. This update will allow users to stream video content from their iPhone—at least from select apps—directly to their vehicle's infotainment screen.
Due to strict safety regulations and legal requirements, video playback will only function when the vehicle is completely stationary and parked. This ensures drivers remain focused on the road while allowing passengers to enjoy entertainment during stops or charging sessions.
While Apple hasn't announced an official release date, the feature is expected to become available with the release of iOS 26.4. However, availability also depends on when third-party developers update their apps to support video playback on car touchscreens.
It remains unclear exactly which applications will support the new feature initially. However, industry insiders expect popular streaming platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Kayo Sports to eventually enable video streaming via Apple CarPlay.
Android Auto has yet to support video playback on car infotainment systems, despite announcing the feature back in May last year. It's worth noting, however, that vehicles running Android Automotive as a native operating system can already download YouTube and other video streaming apps directly—without needing a smartphone connection
